20th March 2020 - In light of the recent Government announcements about the closure of schools and the cancellation of GCSE and A Level exams, all Psychology Revision courses have been cancelled. I will be in touch with all those who have booked on the courses to touch base and to organise the refunding of fees. Please bear with me - this is a difficult and uncertain time for all.
Jo the Tutor runs a number of Psychology A Level revision courses throughout the year to help students get organized and ready for their exams. These are intense days, focusing on tricky content knowledge, exam technique, revision skills, essay-writing practice and encouraging independent and reflective learning.
The courses are complimentary and progressive, so they build on each other throughout the year, giving students the time and skills to prepare and implement a consistent and effective revision programme, rather than a last-minute cramming approach. The courses are limited to small groups so that help can be personalised and attention paid to each individual student’s needs. Working in a group of focused and motivated students allows students to collaborate and share effective practice.
The courses below are aimed at Year 13 Psychology A Level students:
The Easter revision days involve intensive revision of content knowledge, and are aimed at increasing the depth of students’ understanding of the topics, including how to apply their knowledge effectively to answer different styles of exam questions.
The day targets tricky areas of the syllabus where mistakes are often made by students, as well as areas that are heavily weighted in terms of marks. The time is split between focusing on intensive revision of content using different revision techniques, and then immediate application of this knowledge to exam-style questions. The course teaches how to interpret command terms and understand what is expected from different question types/styles, and crucially how to adapt and deliver knowledge to suit the demands of these questions. A key focus of the session is on how to structure answers, enabling students to deliver their answers in a logical and cohesive manner.
As well as revising key areas of content, the revision courses teach the art (or science!) of how to revise effectively. Based on key theories of memory and forgetting, the course teaches a variety of revision techniques that students can take away and use independently following the course. These techniques help students move away from rote learning, which is a notoriously over-whelming and ineffective technique, and towards more effective methods that involve revising key terminology that then act as triggers for recalling the rest of the theory/concept. Combined with learned structures for delivering content, this enables students to write thorough, detailed and logical answers that directly address the question, enabling them to achieve the top mark brackets!
